  27. ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

  29. DAVID J. FARBER was responsible for the design of the DCS system, the
  30. first operational message based fully distributed systems using the first
  31. local area network and is one of the authors of the SNOBOL programming
  32. language.
  33.  
  34. He was one of the principals in the creation and implementation of CSNet,
  35. NSFNet, BITNET II, CREN and the NREN. He was instrumental in the creation
  36. of the NSF/DARPA funded Gigabit Network Testbed Initiative and serves as
  37. the Chairman of the Gigabit Testbed Coordinating Committee. He is the
  38. Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Telecommunication Systems  at the
  39. University of Pennsylvania. He was  formerly with  the University  of
  40. Delaware,  the  University  of California in Irvine, Scientific Data
  41. Systems, the Rand Corporation, and Bell Telephone Laboratories.  He is a
  42. Fellow of the IEEE and  serves on the Boards of Trustees of  the
  43. Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Internet Society, on the Computer
  44. Science and Telecommunications Board (CSTB) of the US National Research
  45. Council . He is a Fellow of the GloCom Institute of Japan and serves on
  46. the Scientific Advisory Board of the Swedish  Royal Institute of
  47. Technology.
